Buick Invicta

Geometric design is the language through which an idea, a design is objectified in its real dimensions. The aim of the course is to make understood the “grammar” of this way of communicating. A scientific reference point is projective geometry which allows the graphical description of objects even of considerable complexity in a clear, unequivocal and universal way.

The course takes place with theoretical lessons alongside practical tests with appropriate exercises, dealing with the following topics:

- Project design in its correlation with perception and geometry, its historical evolution, the specific tools.

- International unification and standardisation in executive design with reference to signs, scales, support formats, conventional symbology, dimensioning.

- Design in industrial practice, its management within a production process and its relationship to the quality system. Design as a testing tool.

- Study of the representation of flat figures: from the point to the line, from the angle to the polygon, from curvilinear figures to notable curves and curves in space.

- Study of the representation of elementary solids (such as prisms, pyramids, regular polyhedrons, sphere and derivatives), sections and interpenetrations between them and their development on the level.

- Study of the representation of three-dimensional figures through the systems of parallel and central projection. In specific, for the former, analysis of the orthogonal and the axonometric projections; for the latter, both the central and casual perspectives.

Orthogonal projections are at the basis of technical design and the development of any design and so will be widely dealt with. Using the first dihedron items of product design and mechanical elements will be designed; objects positioned obliquely in relation to planes of projection will be studied; planes of inversion will be used for the solution of certain problems of execution. Particular attention will be paid to the sketching of sections on objects of different natures.

Axonometry, both orthogonal and oblique, will be widely developed in the creation of designs for interior design. Finally, perspective – tackled in its different application systems – will be applied to exhibition design structures.

Illustration

A rapid, two-dimensional visualization of the idea, entrusted to the pencil even before the computer or, further down the line, the 3-D model, is an important step for designers in focusing their design. This allows the definition and communication of the initial idea before going on to its execution; it also allows the use of intuition at an early stage and the correction of any production problems.

The course illustrates the main techniques and provides the basic abilities for the production of concrete visual supports. A high level of daily commitment to individual practice is required to obtain adequate results. In addition, as weekly tasks assigned by the tutor, illustrations will be handed in. The students will have to pay particular attention to gradually but constantly refining their own skills. The sketch and the rendering are basic tools for designing and an important professional plus for designers themselves.

3 – illustration with digital technique

Science of Vision

Vision Science is part of that group of “Basic Design” materials which have always set SPD apart. Created and introduced more than forty years ago by Prof. Nino Di Salvatore, founder of SPD and an abstract artist of great fame, it is taught today by Prof. Massimo Hachen.

The course develops essentially from the principle that what is “seen” by the eye is not what that sense organ physically reveals, but is the result of a psycho-perceptual process, that is, a formulation the brain restores; visual perception is analysed starting from Gestalt (the psychology of form, which makes up the basic cultural reference point of all of SPD) up to the most recent studies of experimental phenomenology. The importance and topicality of this material for design is obvious in that the approach to whatever “product”, whether virtual or industrial, happens through sight and the psycho-perceptual mechanisms connected to it.

After identifying the resources which allow a human to see, organize and perceive a certain “optical material”, some graphical themes on the representation of psycho-perceptual space are assigned, which the students creatively interpret using various techniques.

The purpose of these exercises is to help the student develop a “creative conscience” , which pays attention to the entire context of the project, as well as the psychological and perceptual aspects of the design. The exercises deal with, among other things, three-dimensional representation, latency, relationships between figure and background, optical illusions, two and three-dimensional ambiguity, space perspective and psycho-perceptual rhythm.

Technology of plastic materials

The lessons are intended to get over a general understanding of the materials, particularly structural ones, and the production processes, especially industrial ones, in design applications. The technological treatment will be preceded by and integrated with historic-cultural references and will be constantly compared to socio-environmental problems. The teaching is coupled with the acquisition of an “ordered consciousness” in the classification of materials, transformation technologies and construction techniques. The most widely used production technologies will be dealt with in detail, particularly in the creation of the industrial object-product. Semi-worked materials will also be described that are usable in the construction of furniture and internal architecture.

The course is in addition characterised by an in-depth analysis of plastic materials, also because of the universal use of polymers in the industrial object-product. Indeed, it will be the themes related to “plastic” to introduce the other material-technological environments – by comparison and paragon, especially regarding the “formal” classifying concepts.

At the start of the course and during it the students may be asked for brief displays in order to try out their comprehension of the previously dealt with topics. Multiple-choice tests will carried out during the course to evaluate the students’ learning. The end-of-course exam takes in all of the programme and will be integrated with the success in the previous tests.

ecnological Materials

PREMISE

A designer is continually expected to come up with the most suitable form for a product to fulfil a particular function, a form that is achieved by modelling a material or a mixture of materials using appropriate technologies.

This implies that a designer also has to choose, from a variety of raw materials, the material that for a whole series of factors is best suited to being modelled, cut, joined and refined so as to produce the best possible piece of work.

It is therefore indispensable, as far as materials are concerned, to understand their particular characteristics, the technologies suitable for working with them and other phenomena relevant both to their production cycle and life cycle.

Theory of form

In a semiologically complex society, signalled by diversified formal models, the course in Theory of Form comes together in the development of the student’s artistic sensibility towards reality, also offering them methods for increasing their imaginative capacity.

The primary aims of the course lie above all in circumscribing and focussing on the value of the terms in play, through the construction of a rich lexis of complex meanings and the articulation of Reality understandable according to an essentially taxonomic procedure: types, classes and groups, indexed by analogy or contraposition. At a later stage the aim of the course is to support and reinforce the personal and Team process of formal conception.

The order of the teaching units includes a brief introduction to the Theory of Understanding and a summary reconstruction of the Gestalttheorie, taken into account for its historic-institutional value and stimulating for development of the student’s imaginative and productive resources. The communicative worthiness of the representation of form is then tackled, starting off from theoretical and conceptual basics up to the choice of methodological lines to support and systematically provide foundations for the ‘creative’ attitude of the young designer.
